The Early Childhood Generalist Endorsement expands opportunities for teachers who currently hold the Early Childhood License (age 3 to grade 3). School districts also benefit from greater flexibility in teacher assignments. Only currently licensed teachers are eligible for this program.
Emphasis on:
- Ohio academic content standards for grades 4-5
- Pedagogy and methods appropriate for students in grades 4-5
- A deep understanding of child/adolescent development
Courses:
The program includes five courses totaling 18 quarter hours (equiv. to 12 semester hours) of graduate-level credit. The first cohort begins Summer 2009. The second cohort begins Fall quarter 2009. See schedule below for course offerings:
Fall 2009 Start:
During Fall quarter 2009:
- Teaching Reading and Language Arts to Fourth and Fifth Graders (4 hrs credit) - taken the first 5 weeks of Fall quarter
- Teaching Social Studies to Fourth and Fifth Graders (3 hrs credit) - taken the second 5 weeks of Fall quarter
During Winter quarter 2010:
- Teaching Mathematics to Fourth and Fifth Graders (3 hrs credit) - taken the first 5 weeks of Winter quarter
- Teaching Science to Fourth and Fifth Graders (3 hrs credit) - taken the second 5 weeks of Winter quarter
During Spring quarter, 2010, you will complete one capstone course that is aligned with the Ohio Standards for the Teaching Profession and requires candidates to complete a comprehensive portfolio and engage in 40 hours of field experience in a fourth and/or fifth grade classroom:
- Integrated Methods and Field Experience (5 hrs credit) - taken all 10 weeks of Spring quarter
Important Note: In order to be recommended for the Endorsement, you must complete all five courses with a 2.75 cumulative Grade Point Average and pass the Praxis II Exam #0014, Elementary Education Content Knowledge. |
