Course
Description

This class guides you through an exploration of leadership that is designed to help you transform your leadership style by enhancing your emotional intelligence, managerial skills and communication.  Through a variety of rich developmental experiences (individual leadership and emotional intelligence assessments, book analysis, interviews, reflection and synthesis) you are provided assessment, challenge, and leadership growth.

Prerequisites

Junior or Senior.

Course Objectives

This course should help you be able to:

  • Read, summarize, analyze, and synthesize materials by contributing to online discussions and by writing effective papers, essays, discussions, and reports.

  • Understand major concepts of leadership, based upon the Kouzes and Posner leadership model and other models of leadership.

  • Understand major concepts of emotional intelligence.

  • Gauge individual leadership and emotional intelligence strengths and weaknesses, based upon a 360-degree Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) and an EI self assessment.

  • Value diversity among individuals and along multi-faceted dimensions.

  • Discuss ethics, values, social responsibility, and other topics as effective leadership practices.

  • Enhance personal leadership and team skills, such as challenging the process, communicating a vision, enabling others to act, modeling the way, conflict management, team facilitation, and negotiation.

  • Reflect on the course activities and theories, integrating the principles in a report that provides synthesis of management and interpersonal communication in transforming leadership through emotional intelligence.


General Course Requirements

Multiple papers, discussion board participation, weekly assignments, and final exam.
