Course
Description

Public speaking is a basic component of communication for students’ future success.  The course offers individual speeches, group special occasion speech activities, virtual discussion postings, online tests, and virtual coaching sessions.  This course is the online version of the face-to-face speech course using technology to achieve personal communication development.

Students must be disciplined, proactive, and self-directed to be successful in this online course.  Extensive examples and real time virtual classroom support is offered to guide the students through the assignments. It is necessary for the course participants to take responsibility for their learning by guiding themselves through a thorough examination of the textbook, assignment requirements, attendance to virtual meetings, and completion of recorded speeches.  It is also necessary for the student to be respectful of assignment deadlines.  Students must familiar with or be persistent with the learning of the technology utilized in the course to be successful in the course.

Methods of Course Instruction

All course assignments will be submitted through the course website at www.connectlucas.com

  1. Virtual instructor led support sessions are scheduled weekly at 10:00 A.M. on Monday and 9:00 P.M. on Wednesdays in Ohio University’s Adobe, virtual classroom. Students will be sent the link.  Computer microphones are required for participation.

  2. Direct student support will take place through e-mail, Skype, or phone
  3. Uploaded student speeches are reviewed with written response within the course website.
  4. Reviewed assignment feedback through grading, Adobe virtual classroom, and/or phone conversations.
  5. Discussion board or Blog student participation is reviewed with a response in the course gradebook.

Course Objectives

  • Communication skills: Further development of verbal and nonverbal communication

  • Confidence: Self-esteem building with public speaking experience and instructional coaching

  • Organizational skills: organize, outline, rehearse, and deliver at least three major speeches

  • Speeches: Delivery of informative, persuasive, and special occasion speeches with polished delivery techniques and appropriate content

  • Visual aids: Appropriate visual aids presentation to create speech interest, clarity, and information retention.

  • Critical thinking: Evaluation of presented material and discussion

  • Research: Ethical research and appropriate documentation

  • Self-assessment: Videotaped speech review for development measurement.

  • Rhetorical theory:  Speech application from assigned reading, virtual discussions, and postings

  • Professional presence: Development of professional self through use of polished presentational techniques

  • Technological effectiveness: Successful usage of presentation hardware and software for speech delivery

  • Quantitative Literacy: Development of presentational skills by creating, interpreting and explaining to listeners with images, graphs, charts, tables or statistical data.
