Description

Approaches to reading and interpreting fiction, poetry, and drama using skills, techniques, and language of interpretation. Intended for nonmajors.

Methods of Course Instruction

Methods of instruction for this course include the Blackboard course content, discussion boards, online lecture notes, email submissions, and a video/DVD that students will view on their own.

English 200 is aimed at developing and cultivating skills necessary for thinking and writing about literature.

Course outcomes:
Students will learn and practice the application of critical vocabulary in responses to fiction, poetry, and drama. Accompanying the development of these skills are active intellectual investigations about what literature is, who gets to decide the definitions and boundaries of literature, and how these concerns shape how and what we read and our relationships with other people and our world.

Course requirements include formal papers, informal papers (reading responses), Blackboard forums (threaded discussion posts), discussion board participation, and class attendance.
