Course Objectives

Because the sports film has been successful and prevalent since the inception of filmmaking, we will examine the cycles of the genre. We will learn about subgenres each week as well. We will learn the fundamentals of filmmaking: shot composition, direction, acting, use of light and sound, and screenwriting. And we will learn how master directors combine the fundamentals of filmmaking with a few tricks of their own.
Hopefully after the completion of the course, we will be better equipped to answer the questions: "What makes a formula for a successful and innovative sports film?" and "Why do audiences keep coming back to see sports films when many times we can predict the outcome?"
