Course
Description

Introduction to major philosophical theories concerning nature of social and political communities including those offered by Plato, Aquinas, Hobbes, Locke, Mill, and Rawls. Consideration of some significant specialized problems in social and political theory including distributive justice, civil disobedience, liberty, punishment, etc.

Course Objectives

Successful completion of this course will make students familiar with the discourse of political philosophy: what
issues have enduring significance for thoughtful people, and what sorts of views about them have emerged over
time. Students will also practice skills in the critical assessment of ideas and arguments.
