Course
Description

Interrelates knowledge of aging, modes of thought, and values to one another and to practical problems in life, society and culture, and world of work. Focuses primarily on biological, psychological, sociological, health care, and public policy aspects of gerontology. Designed to analyze in an interdisciplinary way basic assumptions of aging, process of theory construction, interrelationship of theory and research, procedures of empirical investigation, implications of older age structure for American society, and problems of aged in American society.

Prerequisites

Senior Only & (1 course in SOC or PSY or HCCF).

Course Objectives

  1. To develop an understanding of age-related changes experienced by the elderly.

  2. To understand the influences of technological advances upon the lifestyles of older persons.

  3. To synthesize into a multi-disciplinary perspective the disparate disciplines that are integrated into services for the elderly.

  4. To explore health care decision-making and medical ethics with respect to an aging population.

  5. To discuss the social matrix and its influence upon the experience of growing old.

  6. To gain a personal perspective of the meaning of old age.

  7. To assess the effect of lifestyle upon the nature and quality of growing older.
