Course
Description

This course emphasizes both an understanding of research methods and the development of the critical skills necessary to interpret and to convey research results. In addition to analyzing research methods, the students will examine current technological applications designed to aid the conduct and evaluation of research. Students will analyze research projects in areas of related interest.

Prerequisites

TAS 301 & (PSY 120 or 221 or QBA 201 or MATH 250 or 251) & no credit if (PSY 226 or SOC 351).



Methods of Course Instruction

Course is conducted using Blackboard. Lectures are provided using flash presentations with voice overlay. Assignments will be conducted using the Discussion Board as well as submitting through Blackboard. All quizzes and tests will be conducted using Blackboard.


Course Objectives

After successfully completing this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify the questions that should be asked when critiquing a research study and the ways in which the answers should be evaluated.

  • Assess the benefits and liabilities of each major research approach and the rationale for using a combination of methods in some situations.

  • Identify the most important issues involved in and strategies of writing a research report.

  • Make effective use of the social science studies that shape social policy and popular beliefs.

  • Use research methodologies to develop critical and constructive problem-solving strategies.

  • Design a research proposal, following the outline and guidelines presented in the course.


General Course Requirements

  • A variety of homework assignments will be required during the quarter.

  • Quizzes will be presented for each chapter covered in the book during the quarter.

  • You will be required to participate in several Discussion Board activities during the quarter.

  • Two exams will be given during the quarter.

  • Additionally, you will be required to complete a Research Proposal paper as the final assessment in the course.

How are exams to be taken: Tests will be taken through blackboard, open book and open notes. Tests are timed.
